Benin

The ancient civilization of Benin was located in what is now southern Nigeria and flourished from the 11th century to the late 19th century. It was known for its highly developed political and social systems, which included a powerful monarchy, an efficient army, and a complex system of guilds and artisans.

The Benin Kingdom was also famous for its remarkable artistic tradition, including bronze casting, ivory carving, and woodcarving. The city of Benin was once surrounded by a wall that was longer than the Great Wall of China, which protected the kingdom from invaders. The civilization came to an end in the late 19th century, when the British invaded and destroyed much of the city, including its famous palace and art treasures. Today, the remaining artifacts provide a glimpse into the impressive achievements of the ancient civilization of Benin.
