The Pyramids of Giza
The Pyramids of Giza are some of the most famous and fascinating structures in the world! They were built more than 4,500 years ago in ancient Egypt, and they’re still standing tall today. These pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs, who were the rulers of Egypt. The three largest pyramids at Giza were built for three pharaohs – Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.
The largest of the three pyramids is called the Great Pyramid of Khufu, and it’s over 480 feet tall! That’s taller than a 40-story building! It’s made up of over 2 million stone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons! Can you imagine how long it would take to build a pyramid like that today? It’s truly a marvel of engineering.
One of the most interesting things about the Pyramids of Giza is how they were built. The ancient Egyptians used ramps, sledges, and levers to move the massive stone blocks into place. They also used a system of canals to transport the blocks from the quarries where they were cut to the building site. It’s incredible to think about the amount of work and organization that went into building these structures without modern machinery!
